The Daily Express a switchboard was literally jammed with callers wanting to do their bit for the family of Hina Joloni whose 11year-old son. Donni John Duin, commited suicide a fortnight ago due to poverty.

Some of the callers were from Peninsula, who said they were informed by friends and relatives about the touching report that was carried by the Daily Express on its front page Saturday.

They wished to know how to channel their assistance to the family. Daily Express has since got in touch with a Sabah NGO to coordinate the collection and handing over of the assistance.

Donni, a student at SK Kinarut, was found hanged from the ceiling of their house at Kg Suangon in Kinarut Papar on March 20.

Hina said her son could not bear the abject poverty that the family of six siblings had to endure.

She revaled that shortly before the tragedy. Donni confided to her that he was embarrassed at being teased by his school-mates that the kangkung porridge he brought from home daily was akin to dog vomit.

The family lived on a fixed assistance of RM70 from the Welfare Department and Hina also suffers from thalassaemia and a heart condition. Her rubber tapper husband is in jail for drugs.

When contacted, Penampang District Officer William Sampil said he would instruct his officers to get in touch with Hina with a view to providing her assistance through the “hardcore poor eradication programme” (PPRT).
